There's definitely a pretty tight Curse cycle afoot in Commander 2013. So far, Curse of Inertia, Curse of Chaos, and Curse of Predation have been spoiled, and each of them costs 2C and encourages attacking a particular player. The latest to be added to the card image gallery is for the color that was originally most associated with the Curse Aura type: Black. Say hello to Curse of Shallow Graves:
Curse of Shallow Graves 2B
Enchantment - Aura Curse (Uncommon)
Whenever a player attacks enchanted player with one or more creatures, that attacking player may put a 2/2 black Zombie creature token onto the battlefield tapped.
A 2/2 black Zombie that ETBs tapped is very much a throwback to Innistrad - all of that block's tokens of that type, and some of the Zombie creature cards, hit the battlefield tapped for both flavor and balance reasons. As far as the Curses in Commander 2013 go, in terms of sheer impact, this is up there with Curse of Predation - swinging and getting all the more power on the board as a reward for it is something powerful. Even in a duel, getting a 2/2 token every turn from the hardest-to-remove card type as long as you are taking combats for three mana will give you a very, very big army. Many an MTGSalvation.com Rumor Mill user has noted how insane this is in a Grimgrin, Corpse-Born EDH deck, and it's a fun and strong tool in games of any size at the kitchen table... and perhaps even in eternal-format Constructed?
What do you think of this groan-worthy Curse? Let me know in the comments.
