French Magic site SMFCorp.net has long been one of Wizards of the Coast's favorite resources for foreign-language previews. Today, it seems, it's gotten its Commander 2013 exclusive, and wow is it crazy - a midsize Merfolk Rogue that happens to be all but impossible for your least favorite opponent to deal with. Meet Identity Nemesis:
Identity Nemesis 1UU
Creature - Merfolk Rogue (Rare)
As Identity Nemesis enters the battlefield, choose a player.
Identity Nemesis has protection from that player. (This creature cannot be blocked, targeted, damaged or enchanted by a source controlled by that player.)
You read that right - for 1UU you can get a 3/1 mini-Progenitus. The opponent you choose will not be able to block this when you swing at them with it. It will take no damage from blocking that player's creatures. They will not be able to use targeted removal on it. Damage-based mass removal is a no go. Essentially, the only ways for Identity Nemesis's favored enemy to get it out of the way are board wipes - which will make EVERYONE unhappy - or forcing you to sacrifice it. (By the way, all indications point to this being in the green-white-blue Evasive Maneuvers deck.) This is, as any good Commander design should be, a hell of a political card; if your opponents know you're packing this they'll take pains to make sure they're not the one you make it invulnerable to. It also happens to be quite Legacy-playable - in a two-player game a 3/1 with effective unblockability and hexproof-plus is nothing to sneeze at.
What do you think of this sneaky Merfolk Rogue? Let me know in the comments.
