Former NFL punter and online personality Chris Kluwe, sometimes called "the biggest nerd in football," had the rare privilege of being able to tour the Wizards of the Coast R&D offices recently and to play with Commander 2013 decks months before the general public. Of course, he had to sign a nondisclosure agreement not to share most of what he saw until the release, but today, on his Twitter feed, he previewed one of the new white-blue-black legends, a Giant that never stops healing you and can also turn lifegain into a win condition. Meet Oloro, Ageless Ascetic:
Oloro, Ageless Ascetic 3WUB
Legendary Creature - Giant Soldier (Mythic)
At the beginning of your upkeep, you gain 2 life.
Whenever you gain life, you pay pay 1. If you do, draw a card and each opponent loses 1 life.
At the beginning of your upkeep, if Oloro is in the command zone, you gain 2 life.
Interestingly, we now know the deck name is "Eternal Bargain," which seems to imply recursion and lifegain/life loss themes. Oloro's mana cost may be steep, but hey, it's EDH - six mana is relatively easy to achieve. And you don't even need to cast him to reap his benefits - His constant lifegain alone is a great way to help you survive even the most brutal assaults and to be the last one at the table standing, and is excellent in conjunction with things like Felidar Sovereign and Test of Endurance, but those are hardly necessary when you have his second ability - he'll fill your hand very, very quickly alone, not to mention if you have a lot of creatures with lifelink or an Ajani's Mantra. Let's not even get into what he does with extort. Bottom line, he's reminiscent of the infamous Exquisite Blood/Sanguine Bond combo, but contained in a single card - in a good way.
What do you think of this life-dominating Giant? Let me know in the comments.
