The regular Wednesday column on magicthegathering.com, Uncharted Realms, consists of short stories set in the worlds of Magic lore. With no overarching set or novel to describe them, the legends of Commander 2013 find their time in the Uncharted Realms spotlight especially important. In today's Uncharted Realms story, "The Perfect Gift," Nik Davidson previews the second tricolor commander in the white-blue-black Eternal Bargain deck - a nefarious artificer whose works are more complex and sinister than they seem. Meet Sydri, Galvanic Genius:
Sydri, Galvanic Genius WUB
Legendary Creature - Human Artificer (Mythic)
U: Target noncreature artifact becomes an artifact creature with power and toughness each equal to its converted mana cost until end of turn.
WB: Target artifact creature gains deathtouch and lifelink until end of turn.
Sydri's services, in-story, are for hire for any of the noble houses of her world; she remains staunchly unaligned, healing and killing for whomever can pay. All in all, her artifact themes are a nice nod to the Alaran shard of Esper, the white-blue-black world full of artifacts. Her first activated ability allows her to do what no other legend than Karn, Silver Golem can: animating board-affecting artifacts into formidable attackers and blockers for a turn for just one mana per pop is an astounding thing for control decks that run things like Smokestack to have to finish games with. Her Basilisk Collar-esque second activated ability, though, is perhaps even more noteworthy; it makes combat against your artifact creatures a torture chamber if you have enough open mana.
What do you think of this artifact-altering commander?? Let me know in the comments.
