Every day during the Commander 2013 official spoiler season, Wizards of the Coast has been adding cards to the card image gallery for the set in a low-profile way without much of a preview. Today, one of those cards perhaps deserves a bigger introduction - it's an unusual finisher that works by giving your opponents a glut of resources. Have a glance at Price of Knowledge:
Price of Knowledge 6B
Players have no maximum hand size.
At the beginning of each opponent's upkeep, Price of Knowledge deals damage to that player equal to the number of cards in that player's hand.
So now we know what Nekusar, the Mindrazer and Diviner Spirit were building up to. Wow. That's one heck of a finisher. It sort of follows in the tradition of massive-life-loss black spells like Repay in Kind and Baneful Omen, except it punishes your opponents for doing what they would ordinarily want to do - have card advantage. Unlike Baneful Omen, this doesn't carry the risk of hitting a land and causing no life loss for a turn, but it is sort of useless if your opponents have discard outlets. Don't forget the crazy interactions with Jace, Memory Adept! That is, however, essentially its only weakness. The fact that it removes your maximum hand size is just gravy. This seriously looks like one of the most fun, devious EDH cards in a long time, and though I was initially skeptical about the blue-black-red deck, I may just have to get it for the sake of this card.
What do you think of this brutal, ironic win condition? Let me know in the comments.
