Comings and Goings in the Valley

Sad news comes through the pipeline, as we find out that tonight is the last show in Long Wong's Tempe. The staff posted a statement Sunday night that read in part:

"After 4 years of great music, art & friendship we regret to announce we will be closing our doors. We have had to most amazing staff and experience and can't thank Tempe, Valley Metro area and all our incredible patrons and supporters over the years. With the culture growing we must take a huge step backward to have a future to move forward to and need the time to rest and repose.

We will keep everyone posted on what's to come down the line but tonight and tomorrow will be the last nights to come pay your respects, take photos and meet up in the place it all began. Tonight will be an open jam with some of your Wong favorites and tomorrow will be Sister Lip taking us on home . . . Thank you everyone for everything you've helped us create!!!"

This unfortunate news comes on the heels of the announcement that the Sail Inn is shutting its doors as well. In addition, Club Red/Red Owl is moving from Tempe, albeit relocating in Mesa some 5 miles away. Other recent closings include the likes of the Clubhouse, Rocky Point Cantina, the Sets, Nita's Hideaway and Minder Binders.

The recent spate of closings has prompted rumors that Yucca Tap Room would be closing as well, but a post on their Facebook disputes this:

"THE YUCCA IS *NOT* CLOSING. In fact, we are gearing up for several big shows and improvements. We still care about music and musicians, and we hope folks won't give up on Tempe as a viable option for live music."

Hopefully this will be the last bad news for some time, if you're interested in supporting Long Wong's tonight, more info can be found on their Facebook page.
