Plan B created by Karyl Miller is hilarious serial strip about a one-time TV ad writer who is challenged by daily life. “I wanted to show a person going through hell facing life’s worst problems, like going broke – and make it funny.” explains Karyl. It’s a comic about women, boomers, parents and the economy.

Darrell Lum: Why did you create your comic strip?
Karyl Miller: I created PLAN B because it amuses me. Creating a comic strip is a lot like writing a sitcom pilot, except you have to draw the actors. My friends encouraged and mentored me – in particular Greg Evans who draws the comic strip Luann. Since Plan B has been on GoComics.com/PlanB I’ve had Emails from strangers who said, “Are you watching me?” Another fan sent Beany budget advice. More than a few people shared their personal recession stories with me. It’s very gratifying.
DL: Are there any characters you relate to?
KM: Of course I relate to all the characters because they're all based on real people. Beany is based on me – even looks like me with my old nose. Beany was a stellar advertising copywriter, I was a stellar sitcom writer MillerReport.com Dylan is based on my son, who was once a ticket scalper and is still sort of a rascal, IMHO. Carla is based on my best friend Carla. Beany’s boyfriend Jack is based on my cute (younger) husband Jack whom I met at a San Diego roller rink 10 years ago. Truth be told, I never could resist a flat top.
DL: What about about Karyl?
KM: I almost never laugh. It doesn’t mean I don’t think things are funny. I FEEL the belly laugh deep inside my heart. But instead of laughing, I’ll say, “That’s funny,” or “That’s hysterical.”

Great mix of new and old themes in a surprising twist in Plan B. Thanks for the interview with the author of this and other comics. Nice to see the brains behind the humor.
Three Part Series! I guess I need to to keep the flat top flat!
