Just this past weekend the Motor City was rocked by an event of epic portions. The Annual Motor City Black Age of Comics invaded Youthville Center in Downtown Detroit. It was an awesome display of Urban comic book talent both young and old.
The annual event is hosted by its creator Andre Batts, creator of "Dreadlocks, Jihad A.D. and the Urban Style Universe. Andre is the CEO of Urban Style Comics. Detroit's most prestigious local comic book publisher. The event was host to independent comic book creators from around the country. Its purpose is to showcase up and coming new comic book talent, especially those in the African American community.
There were also legends in the world of comic books in attendance as well like master artist Arvell Jones and Keith Pollard. Both of whom were some of the first Black Artists to work at Marvel and D.C. comics. Detroit Tradecraft , one of the newer but fast rising stars of the local circuit also held court at the annual Urban pop culture extravaganza. They were honored to have Keith Pollard residing at their booth.
Dark Rhino Productions' super scribe of comic books novels and film, Oz Wilson was also in attendance, his creation "The Shadow Walker Chronicles" loomed large over the event. Oz held a writing seminar for up and coming writers and was the M.C. during the closing ceremony panel discussion and did a great job!
The crowd enjoyed getting questions answered from guests like Clif Wilson of Division O and Ableideaz.com. Clif is the creator of comic books like Onyx Unit and B.O.O.T.s, a revolutionary new comic property which uses actual photos of models portraying action heroines combined with two dimensional graphics.
One of the most astonishing creators was Yourli Huff, a former Chicago DEA undercover agent that fought crime in the streets and corruption amongst her own peers. Her creation of Super Hero Huff is loosely based on her own experience during those years of her life. Wow! Real life heroism as well as a cool action comic book.
