The Missouri Comets need a good game when they face the league leading Milwaukee Wave Sunday afternoon. The Comets have been struggling a bit and the Wave are riding high on a 16 game win streak and comfortably sit in first place in the MISL. With just 4 games left for the Comets they are looking to get back on track and shore up some shaky spots before the playoffs.
“We need to find a better rhythm and make a statement going into the playoffs and what better place to start than with Milwaukee,” Comets’ head coach Kim Roentved explained after practice Friday. “I’m still extremely disappointed about the game against Baltimore. It was one of those games where the entire team had an off day. It happens, it just happened on the wrong day at the wrong time. I can’t do anything about that now so we need to look forward.”
The Comets are one of the two teams to beat Milwaukee this season but that was accomplished on Nov 11th. Missouri sits in third in the standings and only needs a win or two to ensure the post season. Milwaukee has already clinched a post season spot and is guaranteed to be one of the top two seeds.
Coach Roentved’s job has not been getting easier this year. Injuries have forced him to constantly juggle lineups and switch players’ positions throughout the year. Midfielder Craig Rocastle went down after playing seven games; defender Stefan Stokic and forward Stefan St. Louis are both out for the rest of the year with knee injuries. Leo Gibson moved from defense up top when forwards were in short supply. They brought in Jeff Hughes and Ibrahim Kante to replace injured players and Gibson’s move forward.
Even practice lineups can be difficult, at least two regulars were sitting out of practice Friday resting injuries but they are expected to be in the lineup Sunday.
Speaking of Kante, it looks like he will be in the lineup for the second straight game.
Sunday is the annual “Pink Game” for the Comets and the second year that the post game jersey auction will benefit the Ali Kemp Educational Foundation (TAKE Foundation).
