In time for Mother's Day, May 11, the comedy Mom's Night Out will be in theaters, starting May 9. All Allyson and her friends plan an evening out for a grown-up evening of dinner and conversation, but what unfolds as they depend on their husbands to watch the kids for three hours is a crazy comedy of errors. The movie is intended as a true-to-life, family-friendly, redemptive comedy that celebrates motherhood and parenting with all of its challenges.
The Erwin Brothers direct this comedy, which is produced by Kevin Downes, Jon Erwin, Andrew Erwin, and Daryl Lefever. Patricia Heaton and David Hunt are executive producers. The "faith-based division" of Sony Pictures, Affirm, is one of the many production companies.
Andrew and Jon Erwin are hoping their movie can demonstrate that films don’t have to be crude to be funny. They want to offer a unique opportunity for those who love comedy but who don’t enjoy coarse humor. Andrew Erwin states, "I think that Christians like movies like anyone else [and] they want to see their values represented... They want to be entertained and they want to have a fun experience....There hasn’t been funny material that has come out of the space that isn’t offensive. Christians like to laugh too... We don’t feel like we have to sacrifice how funny it is at the altar of something crass or offensive.”
Independent dramatic, redemptive, family-friendly movies have reached wide audiences and done well at box offices in recent weeks. Son of God, God's Not Dead, and Heaven is for Real are still in theaters. Son of God with $22MM (estimated) budget, brought in $26MM (USA) opening weekend and has grossed to day $68MM (Worldwide) | $60MM (USA). God's Not Dead exceeded its $2 MM budget on its opening weekend with $9.2MM (USA) and has grossed to date $56MM (USA). Heaven is for Real with a budget of $12MM (estimated) brought in $23MM (USA) and grossed $66MM (USA). It will be interesting to see if a "Christian Comedy" does as well.
Box office receipts for movies like The Son of God, God's Not Dead, and Heaven is for Real are significant for many reasons. When we pay for tickets in a movie theater, we are voting for that movie and contributing to ongoing showings, distribution. and copies of the movie. How well a movie does in its opening weekend affects the ability of movie producers and their investors to show and distribute their films. How a film does at the box office on its opening weekend affects how many more theaters pick up the film, how long the film stays in theaters, and ultimately how it is distributed. It demonstrates to potential producers the interest in the kinds of films that are well attended, hence the marketability of such movies.
