On December 27,2012 this writer stopped into the Brokerage Comedy club to see what was going on, the bar had that holiday feel to it, with decorations up and the overall holiday spirit still in full early winter bloom. The show was in the spirit of giving as well, as it was a fund raiser to help out St.Judes Children's Hospital. A group of comics were on hand to deliver the gift of laughter, in the hopes that it will help the children whom St.Jude's assist.
Tim Gage, who has been on the Long Island Comedy scene for at least twenty years or more, he is celebrating an anniversary now, he gave up smoking pot 25 years ago. He recalled how as a teenager he tried mowing the lawn while high until it was pointed out to him that the lawn mower wasn't even on. Growng up he hated his family and aspired to get a job and never see his family again. He is not exactly pleased with his current job, however his employers try to make the place like family by delegating Tuesday as "pizza day". "I'm 52 years old, do you think I give a _______ about pizza day?" His main reservation about having his car valet parked is that the valet parker will knock the Stop n Shop card off his key chain and then he will need to go into the store and fill out another form. He recalls going to his son's first grade teacher conference which he described as "totally nonsense", "I took a whole sememster of college at Nassau Community College, I know all about this stuff." His son does not exactly excel in sports, as the father he was the CYO coach and had to put his son in right field, so his son said "okay, thank you." He made it to first base once because he got hit by a pitch. His 17 year old son says to him "Yo son, do you got five dollars?" He replies "If your going to call me son then you should give me five dollars."
Lori Palminteri, has been performing at Governors/Brokerage for over two years now, she shared about her 21 year old brother who sprinkles the toilet seat, and how she scrubs it...........with his toothbrush. Her brother is in Afghanistan fighting terrorists now.................with his X-Box, however he did sell her drugs at a discount. Lori was in the honors program at Suffolk Community College, "being the smartest person at Suffolk is like being the smartest person on Jersey Shore."
Anthony Didomenico lost 109 lbs, he is single having moved back home at the age of 30. He said to his ex "you can keep the apartment and all the bills. He does not like internet dating and believes that people should meet "organically" and that today's dating is "forced."
Mick Thomas is originally from Ireland and still fosters that thick accent. He has observed that in America people have feelings, "In Ireland we just get depressed and drunk." He married a Long Island girl and is now the proud owner of two children, and has noticed that after having children there is very little, if any sex life, "it's kinda like a Carnival Cruise that left the dock and your not on it." He shaved his head once for St.Jude's Children's Hospital, he did it for the kids and because he was tired of going to the barber.
Headlining the show was Joe Starr, who is a veteran of the Long Island Comedy scene and also has several movie and TV credits as well. He stated that he is just as overweight as he was on his first day of his diet, and how he now needs to sit when he pees. His knees are shot but he knows when it is going to snow, and listens to his body say "when am I f_ _ _ _ _ going to eat?" In his youth he spent twelve years in Catholic school and described the nuns as being "Darth Vader with a face." As a male, he described the two second delay men feel after they have been hit in the lower region before the pain sets in "I think its set up so that men have two seconds to pray." He also mentioned medication usually having negative side effects "why aren't there any meds that have positive side effects? like making you grow taller? most meds make you s_ _ _ __ and bleed."
The Brokerage is open five nights a week except for Mondays and Tuesdays, they have fund raisers often, as well as national headliners, check out their website for more details.
