Comedian Robert Schimmel has passed away due to injuries he endured after a serious car accident on August 26th. The car's driver, Schimmel's 19 year old daughter Aliyah Schimmel, remains in stable condition. Schimmel was 60 years old.
Sources say that Aliyah swerved in order to avoid an accident in her lane causing her to lose control of her car. Father and daughter were traveling on Interstate Highway 10 in Phoenix, Arizona.
Schimmel was best known for his raunchy and controversial stand-up comedy. His material made him a big hit on The Howard Stern Show, which he appeared on many times during his career.
Throughout his career Schimmel released five comedy albums and wrote one book titled Cancer on Five Dollars a Day, which dealt with the death of his son.
Aside from having to battle with the death of his son, Schimmel dealt with numerous health issues of his own. Schimmel suffered a heart attack in 2000 and was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma shortly after. This past January Schimmel was diagnosed with cirrhosis.
No matter how difficult Schimmel's personal life was he always managed to make light of it in his stage act. Schimmel's direct style earned him many fans and earned him a spot at number 76 on Comedy Central Presents: The 100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All-Time.
Aside from his stand-up act, Schimmel served as a writer for the popular 1990s sketch comedy show In Living Color and appeared in several movies including Scary Movie 2 and A Low Down Dirty Shame.
