Model train enthusiasts will find Choo Choo Barn - Traintown U.S.A.® a must visit. It is rated third of Strasburg’s eight notable attractions. This special place has a 1,700 square foot train layout with 22 working trains and more than 150 hand built animated figures and vehicles. The landscape in the layout is representative of the local Lancaster community. There is a realistic barn raising, the Strasburg Railroad, Dutch Wonderland, the zoo, a baseball game and operating quarry.
Christmas is the perfect time for a visit to Choo Choo Barn - Traintown U.S.A.®, while kids are on vacation. From November 29 to January 5 Choo Choo Barn is transformed to share the magic of Christmas. Holiday decorations throughout the train layout with a snow-covered landscape are highlighted with Santa’s sleigh flying over the 1,700 square foot train extravaganza.
Choo Choo Barn began in 1945 after George Groff returned from World War II. He purchased a $12.50 Lionel train set for his 2-year-old son Gary for Christmas. He set it up in the basement and over the years it expansion attracted neighbors and townspeople to visit his elaborate display.
It progressed to the point where a structure with greater space was located nearby for a real Choo Choo Barn. At that point his endeavor was set up as a financial venture with its official opening on Thanksgiving Day 1961. It was an immediate success with locals and visitors viewing over 600 square feet of detailed landscaping, 6 trains, and 6 animated figures. It has matured over the years to its currents state.

Strasburg is a Lancaster County borough with a population of 2,800. It is frequently called ‘Train Town USA’ due to many railroad attractions, with Choo Choo Barn, Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, and Strasburg Railroad.
Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is only a short distance east of Choo Choo Barn at 300 Gap road. The museum presents the history of Pennsylvania’s railroads using several types of media with its real life collection. An orientation video is shown in an early 20th century passenger depot setting. The museums collection has over 100 vintage locomotives and railcars, with steam, diesel and electric locomotives.
Strasburg PA is a 5 hour drive of 310 miles from Rochester NY.
Drive south on route 15 past Binghamton into Pennsylvania past Williamsport, Lewistown, into Harrisburg. Then drive southeast on route 283 to route 30 then Strasburg Pike south to Strasburg, following signs to Choo Choo Barn.
