Probably nothing holds more of your life’s important data than your laptop. Whether it’s last night’s homework, a big corporate presentation or your life’s collection of MP3’s, chances are you would be really freaked if it got damaged. (We all back up nightly, right???)
When it comes to protecting life’s physical assets, there’s a company out there that’s been doing it as long as I can remember – Pelican Cases. They’re the ones that make those heavy-duty, plastic, waterproof cases you always see on the airport luggage carousels. It’s what you buy if you have expensive electronics to protect against crushing, water, dust and dirt. It’s their patented watertight seal that makes them so valuable.
Well now urban warriors, you can get your own Pelican case, just made for hauling around your laptop, iPad and whatever else you choose to carry. Their new Pelican ProGear line is made for just that. With four backpack models to choose from, you can carry a lot or a little, knowing that it’s protected from just about all life’s little hazards.
I recently tested the Urban Elite U100 which holds just a ton of stuff; including a 15” laptop (up to 17” Apple), my tablet, recording devices, still and video cameras, and all my paperwork. Your laptop sits in a waterproof compartment with crushproof sides, top and bottom and is locked tightly away with a firm clasp at the top. Typical with Pelican cases, you can add two decent sized padlocks to protect your laptop even further if you are really worried about it disappearing.
There are a couple other pockets suitable for your iPad or other tablet. Both are next to hard plastic sections of the case, so you know your tablet won’t get bent.
All in all, there are five main sections to the backpack, representing 16 liters of storage space. The combination of sizes is well thought out for carrying chargers, adapters, and such. There are oodles of organizer pockets and compartments in the front section for pens, wallets, USB drives, etc.
Along the sides, you’ll find handy load compression straps so the areas of the bag that aren’t filled to capacity can be pulled tighter – keeping all your load compact as possible. On the right side, there is a concealed pocket for your water bottle.

The back has great padding with deep ventilation channels. In front, you’ll find adjustable chest straps to make sure the fit is just right.
