Come and join the fun as Detroit hosts the annual Motown Winter Blast

Detroit, Michigan is offering visitors a chance to experience a wide range of fun, hip, family-friendly winter activities that are sure to delight all ages and help you embrace the winter season when the city hosts the annual Motown Winter Blast celebration being held February 8-10. It is approximately a 2.5 hour drive from Cleveland.

Motown Winter Blast Centered around Detroit's Campus Martius Park, Motown Winter Blast features a multitude of various, unique activities that will appeal to visitors of all interests.

Here are some of the highlights of activities being offered by Motown Winter Blast. Participatory sports and activities include free snowshoeing (Snowshoes are available for free for both adults and children) and free ice skating in the park. Ice skate rental will be free to the first 250 people each day and after that will be $3. There will also be marshmallow roasting and visitors can use the brazarios located just outside the Atrium of the Compuware World Headquarters to roast away.

And don't miss the free professional and amateur ice skating demonstrations and exhibitions throughout the weekend .

The Flagstar Bank Ice Garden (located in Cadillac Square) will feature carved and lighted ice sculptures that include intricately carved ice chairs, an ice bench and a carving of an Eskimo family with open faces where visitors can pose for photos. There will also be ice carving demonstrations on Friday, February 8.

Another highlight of the event will be the dog sledding exhibitions presented by dog sledder Amanda Vogel and her Snomad Racing Sled Dogs team. The Snomad team has participated in races all over the U.S. and Canada. Be sure to say "hi" to Amanda's retired lead dog, Buz.

For children there will be a Kids Zone which will feature performances from magicians, jugglers, comedians, puppeteers, a ventriloquist and a clown. Radio Disney will be on hand with interactive performances and games.

Motown Winter Blast is also playing host to the Greektown Casino-Hotel Taste of Detroit. The Taste of Detroit will feature local cuisine and culinary delights along with free musical entertainment. More than 50 entertainment acts will be performing during the Winter Blast.

Visitors will find Comfort Zones all over the event (every 150 feet on the Winter Blast site) with heated tents and warming stations in local buildings.

New this year is Hockey Haven in the D sponsored by the Detroit Red Wings and Olympia Entertainment offering interactive hockey games where fans will get a chance to win prizes. (Cadillac Square)

Hours for the Motown Winter Blast are 11 a.m.- 11 p.m. both Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. on Sunday. There is no monetary charge for admission to the event but you are required to donate a canned food item or book to gain entrance to Winter Blast.
