Comcast Honors Student Achievement at New Mexico Reading Challenge Celebration

As a proud supporter of the "New Mexico Reads to Lead" initiative signed by New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez to expand funding for districts throughout the state, Comcast recently attended the New Mexico Reading Challenge Celebration at Nizhoni Elementary School in Shiprock.

Students and members of the community were honored at Nizhoni Elementary for being a top participant in the “New Mexico True” reading challenge. As part of the challenge, students from 2nd through 4th grade were encouraged to continue reading throughout the summer months for a chance to win great prizes, including a grand prize of a hot air balloon ride with Gov. Martinez.

In addition, the mid-size city and small town that had the highest level of student participation in the reading competition would receive a free community-wide reading celebration, hosted by the Governor and sponsored by Comcast. Comcast also hosted a random drawing, awarding one netbook computer to a lucky student.

“Grade-level literacy should be the minimum expectation for every student in our state,” said Governor Susana Martinez. “We know all too well that students who can’t read on grade level will face ever-increasing challenges in school and in life. The ability to read is the key to excel in every other subject and serves as the foundation for success inside and outside the classroom.”

The "New Mexico Reads to Lead" initiative will fund resources such as reading coaches, common screening tools, professional development for teachers, and reading interventions for more than 100,000 students in New Mexico.
