Comcast announces first annual Balloon Fiesta Film Fest winners (Photos)

Organizers of the Balloon Fiesta Film Festival, presented by Comcast, recognized student filmmakers last week during an awards ceremony and screening event at Mesa del Sol in Albuquerque.

Held during the 41st Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, the Film Fest offered aspiring filmmakers the opportunity to film pilots, chase crews, volunteers and visitors to Balloon Fiesta during the event’s opening weekend, October 5-7.

In addition to five University teams representing the University of New Mexico, Western New Mexico University and Santa Fe Community College, the festival also had one K-12 participant from the Media Arts Collaborative Charter School (based in Albuquerque).

Participants of the festival chose one of five planned perspectives for their work from this list of aspects: Pilot, Chase Crew, Guest/Fan, Volunteer/Staff, or Event. Participants were given deadlines, and permitted to register for media credentials providing them with many opportunities for film production during Balloon Fiesta, and even the chance to sign-up for balloon rides if needed to assist in the production of their films.

The submitted films are being presented through a variety of mediums, including: the official website of Balloon Fiesta, Comcast On Demand, and Balloon Fiesta’s Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter accounts. Final entries were measured on generous standards of a plot or theme, creativity, information about the event, originality and production standards.

First place honors went to Kirill Oleynikov from Santa Fe Community College who won $300 and a Collector Balloon Fiesta Pin set, in second place were Austin Madrid and Jarred Chavez from the University of New Mexico who won $200 and a Balloon Fiesta Bomber Jacket, and third place was taken by Crystal Katcher from Santa Fe Community College who won $100 and two Balloon Fiesta VIP Hospitality Passes.

Honorable mentions were: Marianna Biggs, Pria Jackson, Kristen Caldwell, and Tyler Talmadge from Media Arts Collaborative Charter School, Annie Buttons and Amrit Khalsa from Santa Fe Community College, and Robert Ramirez and Erin Romaneschi from Western New Mexico University.
