Comcast announces $280,000 in grants to enhance digital learning

Denver, Aurora and Commerce City Groups to Create Internet Essentials Learning Zone, Helping to Bridge the Digital Divide

This week, Comcast announced that it will be providing $280,000 in grants and in-kind support to non-profits in Denver, Aurora, and Commerce City to create “Internet Essentials Learning Zones”.

Through the Gold Medal Recognition program, the following partners in three communities throughout Colorado will receive grants and in-kind contributions to boost their digital capabilities and offerings:

  • Denver -Mile High United Way, which will support a community computer lab and technology training center in the new Mile High United Way headquarters building set to open in Curtis Park in August 2014.
  • Aurora - Aurora Public Library, which will use the grant to expand hours of operation at its innovative computer lab located in a Kmart store at 15200 E. Colfax Avenue and to purchase several additional computer stations
  • Commerce City – The Boys & Girls Club, which will use the grant to support the computer lab in the new Club location
  • Aurora and Commerce City – KidsTek will use the grant for new, in-depth technology courses for students in an additional high school in Aurora Public Schools and Adams City High School

In addition to the grants, Comcast made the following announcements:

  • Internet Essentials-eligible families in Denver Public Schools, Aurora Public Schools, and Adams 14 School District in Commerce City who are not currently customers can receive six months of complimentary Internet service if they apply and are approved for the program by March 18th, 2014.
  • Internet Essentials has been extended indefinitely – beyond its initial three-year commitment. In just two and a half years, the initiative has connected more than 1.2 million low-income Americans and more than 14,000 families across Colorado.
