Combs and Bickley hold two top-10 spots in state senior championships

Bruce Combs and Bill Bickley hold two Top 10 positions on the leaderboard, after three of five weekends of the 44th annual Florida State Senior Handicap Championship Tournament, being conducted at AMF Galaxy East Lanes in Ocala.

According to up-to-date standings posted Tuesday, Combs, of Sarasota, is tied for third place in the 60-64 age classification all-events with a handicap score of 1,446, and he is ninth in nine-game handicap all-events with 2,132. In addition, he teamed with Fred Shaffer for a 12-place tie in handicap doubles at 1,406, and he is tied for 16th place in 60-64 singles at 714.

Bickley, of Sarasota, holds down the No. 6 spot in 65-69 singles with a score of 733, and he is tied for tenth in six-game all-events with 1,363.

Three other bowlers from the Sarasota-Manatee-Charlotte County area are also positioned on the Top 10 leaderboard.

Ron Elliott of Sarasota is seventh in 50-54 six-game all-events with 1,407, and he is tied for 15th in singles at 684. Dave Baker of North Port is seventh in 50-54 singles with 715 and 12th in six-game all-events with 1,347. Larry Butler of Sarasota is ninth in 60-64 singles with 728, 20th in nine-game all-events with 2,095 and 23rd in 60-64 six-game all-events with 1,357.

Other area players in the top 25 include: Robert Yoder of Sarasota, 13th in 60-64 singles at 720 and 22nd in all-events at 1,358; Dennis Ball of Punta Gorda, 14th in 65-69 all-events at 1,352 and 15th in singles at 707; Jerry Tucciarone Jr. of Sarasota, 15th in 60-64 all-events at 1,341; Sandy Combs of Bradenton, 18th in 50-54 all-events at 1,312; Karen Shaffer, 22nd in 50-54 all-events at 1,364; Cecilia Butler, tied for 24th in 55-59 singles at 666; and Gary Seitz of Punta Gorda, tied for 24th in 60-64 all-events at 1,354.

In addition, two Sarasota teams are among the leaders in the four-player team event: Butler's Team, fifth at 2,673, and Purple Hooters, 22nd at 2,584.

Jacksonville's Brown in first place in two categories

William Brown of Jacksonville is the only current two-time leader, as he leads the 55-59 age division in both singles (826) and all-events (1,544).

The team standings are headed by Senior Moments of Miami with a score of 2,757, while topping the list in doubles are James Valerio and Tom Bodziak of Mims with 1,516.

Other leaders in singles, by age category: Frank Nopper of Jacksonville (70-up) 782; Bill Starch of Port Orange (65-69) 768; Tim Ballas of Ocala (60-64) 788; and James Wright Jr. of Eustis (50-54) 774.

The other all-events leaders, also by age divisions: Don Wells of Palm Harbor (70-up) 1,491; Chuck Tice of Sebastian (65-69) 1,426; Rosa Carreras of Mirimar (60-64) 1,425; and Billy Mack of Gainesville (50-54) 1,497.
