Columbus replica ships, the Nina and Pinta, will be sailing into the Waukegan Harbor on Wednesday, July 29 and staying until Monday, August 3, 2009. Visitors have the opportunity to experience walking
the decks of ships that replicate the ships that crossed the ocean when Columbus set sail to the new world.
The Nina and Pinta are touring together as a “sailing museum.” The original Nina is the most historically accurate replica ever made, according to the Columbus Foundation website. The Nina is a replica of the ship that Columbus sailed across the Atlantic Ocean on his three voyages of discovery to the new world in 1492. The tiny ship was sailed over 25,000 miles by Columbus. The original Nina was last heard of in 1501. The Pinta was recently built in Brazil to travel along with the Nina. The Pinta has a larger deck space for tours.
The replica ships are an intriguing sight as they sit in the harbor. Visitors can take a self guided tour of the ship for $7 adults / $5 children / $6 seniors.
Visit the replica ships in the Waukegan Harbor, next to the Waukegan Yacht Club at 199 Harbor Place in Waukegan, Illinois.
