Sharvess Phipps, a 20 year old Columbus resident, has been sentenced to 162 years and 11 months in prison related to multiple burglaries, home invasions and assaults which he committed during the summer of 2012. The crimes committed by Phipps and his accomplices were so frightening that one resident described the crime spree as the “summer of terror” according to 10-TV.
Phipps was just 19 when he committed numerous violent crimes in the Brice Rd. area of southeast Columbus. One resident described in court how Phipps hit him over the head with a gun while robbing him. A woman stated that Phipps was in her house “at the foot of my bed; he had to pass my child twice.” In all, dozens of homes were broken into and items taken during the violent home invasions included guns, heirloom jewelry, computers, televisions and several other items.
Most of Phipp’s victims are elderly. An 80 year old man expressed relief that Phipps is off the streets after the sentencing. Many of the neighbors were present when Judge Richard Scheward pronounced the sentence, calling Phipp’s actions, “the most serious offenses, short of murder.”
What those victimized by Phipps may not have realized is that this was not his first time committing crimes in Columbus, Ohio. In March 2011, he was charged with domestic violence. Phipps pleaded guilty to a reduced charge. In April 2012 and again in July 2012, statements of violations of his probation were filed. His probation was revoked. In October 2011, Phipps entered a plea of guilty to a misdemeanor drug possession charge. He never paid the fine and court costs and the court sent the matter to collections on January 3, 2012. Phipps was also charged with carrying a concealed weapon, illegal possession of a firearm and having a weapon under disability. Having a weapon under disability means that the suspect has been sentenced to parole or probation for previous offenses or has had some other sentencing where the individual has been ordered to not have any weapons.
In June 2012, Phipps was again charged with carrying a concealed weapon and on June 29, Phipps was charged with being in possession of criminal tools and use of a firearm. It is these crimes that Phipps was under supervision for at the time he committed the crimes for which he received the 162 years and 11 month sentence, as outlined in case number 12 CR 006254.
Among the charges were at least seven counts of aggravated robbery and four counts of aggravated burglary while brandishing a firearm, six counts of robbery, five counts of burglary, three counts of kidnapping, one count of felonious assault, four counts of theft, six counts of having a weapon under disability and several other charges. Sharvess Phipps had entered a plea of “not guilty” to all of the charges.
Phipps will be transferred from the Franklin County Jail to the Ohio Department of Corrections to begin serving his sentence.
