Columbus dog parks and general information

Tired of taking the dog for a walk around the same couple of blocks every day? If you're looking for a new doggy-friendly venue, why not check out a dog park? Columbus and the surrounding area is full of many different dog parks to suit your and your dog's needs. If your dog is quite social and loves to be around other dogs in a community environment, the Pooch Playground Dog Park in Gahanna may be one option for you. This dog park features a large area for dogs to run and play, an agility course, and even a swimming creek. There is also a small dog area.

If your dog prefers a little more peace and tranquility during a walk, you might take one of the pet-friendly trails in the Columbus metro parks. Inniswood Metro Gardens, Prairie Oaks, and Slate Run parks are only a few that have these trails. Visit Metro Parks for a full list.

When visiting any dog park, it is important to keep several things in mind.

1. Bring water for yourself and your dog(s), especially in the heat of summer. While some parks offer water and bowls for your dog’s use, these may be occupied or difficult to locate. Fill up a jug of water and bring a small bowl with you. Pet supply stores also offer the Portable Handi-Drink for Dogs on the Go, which includes a water bottle and easy snap on bowl.

2. Bring a bag to pick up any accidents at the park. It is everyone’s responsibility to keep the parks clean, so set an example and clean up after your dog.

3. Ensure that your dog is up-to-date on vaccinations.

4.  Know your dog’s comfort level before going off-leash in the park. Most parks have rules against dogs of any breed who act aggressively towards others, so ensure that a busy dog park is a happy environment for your dog. If it’s your first time, try first walking around the perimeter with your dog on-leash to get him acquainted.

5. Check your park’s rules before bringing young children; some have rules restricting children under 12 from entering leash-free areas of dog parks for their own safety.
