Columbus Day is Oct. 14, 2013, and Americans are trying to make plans for the long holiday weekend which begins this Friday. They're wondering, "Is the post office open or closed Monday, Oct. 14?" The next question is usually, "Is there mail delivery on Columbus Day?" According to The New York Times on Thursday, Oct. 10, the post office is closed on Columbus Day, and mail won't be delivered on Oct. 14—at least in the United States that is. Because Columbus Day is a federal holiday, all post offices are closed, not open in the area.
The post office isn't the only place that's closed on Columbus Day. Americans are confused as to what's open and what's closed. CBS Miami News reported on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, "The government shutdown has crippled national parks across the country, including Biscayne National Park. Now, with Columbus Day approaching federal, state and local law enforcement officers will be asking boaters who normally hang out on the water in the park to leave."
Columbus Day is always observed on the second Monday of Oct., and the holiday remembers Christopher Columbus' arrival to the Americas on Oct. 12, 1492. The holiday is a controversial one though and not all states honor it in the same way. According to Time and Date, "Not all parts of the United States celebrate Columbus Day. It is not a public holiday in California, Nevada and Hawaii."
