What's open and what's closed on Columbus Day? Americans are wondering, "Is there mail delivery on Columbus Day, and are the banks open Monday, Oct. 14?" Many people have Monday off from work and are asking if the post office is open or closed. More importantly, Rhode Islanders are worried that the camping plans they made for Columbus Day weekend in nearby New Hampshire will be canceled because the ongoing government shutdown caused 22 campgrounds to close, reported CBS Boston News on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013.
Local residents are also concerned that a busy thoroughfare in Providence will be closed this weekend. According to The Providence Phoenix on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, there's one busy section of Providence that is scheduled to be closed for the entire weekend and may put a kink in your travel plans though.
"Atwells Avenue in Providence will shut down for its annual Columbus Day Festival, a three-day event featuring a Sunday morning parade, rides for small children, and a seemingly endless string of vendors selling sausage and pepper sandwiches. The streets of Federal Hill will be adorned with Italian flags to honor the explorer."
Columbus Day is a federal holiday and is always observed the second Monday in October. This year, Columbus Day just happens to fall on Oct. 14, 2013.
You're in luck if you want to go shopping on Columbus Day, however, if you're looking to mail packages or register your car at the local DMV, you'll have to wait until Tuesday, Oct. 15 if you can't get to it this week.
The U.S. Post Office is Closed on Columbus Day in Rhode Island
According to the USPS Post Office, there is no mail delivery on Columbus Day, Monday, Oct. 14, 2013 in Rhode Island or the rest of the United States. Columbus Day is also a U.S. Postal Holiday (USPS), and all U.S. post offices are closed for business. This includes not only mail delivery to your Rhode Island residence or business, but also local post office lobby hours as well. Mail delivery will resume on Tuesday, Oct. 15.
Are Banks Open on Columbus Day?
Because Columbus Day is a federal holiday, Monday, Oct. 14 is also one of many bank holidays this year. Good news for TD Bank Stores and Webster Bank customers though! They're just two of the banks that are open in the greater Providence, Rhode Island area. Call first to be sure if your local bank branch is open on Columbus Day.

Is Walmart, Best Buy, Target, Kmart Open on Columbus Day?
Absolutely! In fact, most businesses are open and look forward to huge Columbus Day Sales. If you haven't seen them already, you'll soon be bombarded with Columbus Day sales flyers, banners and ads in the newspapers, on TV, and the internet. Providence, Rhode Island area Walmart, Target, Kmart and Best Buy stores are already buzzing about it. Factory outlets, car dealers, appliance stores, media outlets, etc, all have great sales this holiday weekend. In many cases, these businesses start gearing up the Friday before the holiday to take advantage of a four day weekend.
