The long Columbus Day weekend is upon us, and while many people are looking forward to having Oct. 14, 2013 off, others are trying to make plans and wondering, "Are banks open on Columbus Day?" Walmart is open on Columbus Day, so most people assume it's business as usual like any other day, and they should be able to do their banking. Not so with banks. According to The New York Times on Thursday, Oct. 10, banks have the option to close, therefor most banks are closed on Columbus Day. Most bank lobbies won't be open for deposits, withdrawals or loan applications on Monday, Oct. 14—at least in the United States that is.
Banks aren't the only locations that are closed on this particular Columbus Day. Americans are confused as to what's open and what's closed. CBS Miami News reported on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, "The government shutdown has crippled national parks across the country, including Biscayne National Park. Now, with Columbus Day approaching federal, state and local law enforcement officers will be asking boaters who normally hang out on the water in the park to leave."
Meanwhile, ABC 6 News on Friday, Oct. 11 reported, that the Rhode Island National Guard says it may have to remove itself from as many as 15 local events because it can't pay soldiers for the extra work. Roughly 300 guardsmen and women were furloughed when the government shutdown went into place.
