The Columbus Dispatch reported today that Mayor Michael Coleman's $130 million capital budget includes $7.3 million for the creation and improvement of Columbus bikeways.
After announcing the Bicentennial Bikeways plan in 2007, Columbus was forced by the poor economy to put some of the plans for bike improvements on hold while money went to more basic necessities. But with capital spending in Columbus going up this summer (pending approval by the City Council), bikeways are back on the planners' table.
Mayor Coleman and his staff do not anticipate any amendments to the proposed plan, as Council members were consulted during the planning process for the plan. Also, six of seven council members stood next to him as he announced the plan at an event yesterday, a good indication that they are behind the plans.
The budget is still about half what it normally is during more prosperous times, but any improvement is welcome after a year of cuts and postponements to city facilities and improvements.
