Author’s Note: This article is the first in a series called Columbia’s Most Morbid, which will showcase the best of goth Columbia.

Yet another reality South Carolina goths face is the drab selection of radio programming suited to their sensibilities. Face it—Rock 93.5 just doesn’t cut it. Sure, they play some Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails here and there, but what about the other 99.9% of the time? Could South Carolina actually have an offering to appease your covet of strange sounds?

Fortunately, it’s true. The best place to hear your favorite dark music in Columbia is through the University of South Carolina’s student-run radio station, WUSC. Known for its commercial-free, free-format, non-top-40 programming, the station boasts a variety of genre-specific shows, including those that’ll satisfy a spectrum of sepulchral yearnings!

The most relevant show for those who love Bauhaus, The Birthday Massacre, and The Cure intermixed with Cradle of Filth, Gary Numan, and Joy Division is Dark Entries Goth Radio hosted by DJ D. This show airs on 90.5 FM and streams at wusc.sc.edu on Mondays from 8 p.m. until 10 p.m. and sometimes longer, depending on the status of the following program. DJ D plays the best in goth and darkwave, both old and new, and features a smorgasbord of bands. His knowledge of the music is evident in his anecdotes, and his musings on movies, as well as his advice from Uncle Charles (Manson, that is), give the show a loveably morbid personality. It’s the best two hours of the worst day of the week you’ll ever experience!

Sometimes, though, you’re likely to want a bit more noise in your beats. If it’s industrial you’re lusting after, check out Rivet Head Radio on Thursdays from noon to 2 p.m. Spinning such acts as God Module, Laibach, and Combichrist, Rivet Head Radio will fill in the niche tantalizingly left by the dabbling of Dark Entries Goth Radio. Let Rivet Head Radio round out your week!

But, maybe you want something with more aggression. WUSC’s got you covered again with two programs totally devoted to metal. DJ Jessi’s Metal Cock Radio explores underground metal. It airs on Mondays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., right before Dark Entries Goth Radio. Your Mondays were never so spectacular! DJ Damien’s Deathcock Metal Radio plays all subgenres of metal on Thursdays from 10 p.m. until midnight, just in time to energize you for the weekend!

Of course, goths don’t necessarily have the same tastes, and WUSC has far more programming than that listed here. Allow yourself to tune into your guilty pleasure (in terms of music, at least) by checking out the other programs. Or, experience new auditory stimuli to shake up your subconscious. You can be sure that if it’s indie, underground, or bizarre, WUSC has a show for it!

I'm not much of a radio listener, mainly because I find it close to impossible to find something to suit my tastes. However, after reading this article, I will definitely be listening to these stations. I especially am looking forward to hearing the Dark Entries Goth Radio broadcast. DJ D sounds like a very interesting host. Thank you for guiding me to the kind of radio I've been looking for!!

I definitely agree with Carrie, i usually shy away from the radio cause its just not worth listening to hours of kid rock or sum 41 just for 1 Cure song. but I'll definitely be sure to check some of these stations out. and I'm excitedly looking forward to future installments of "Most Morbid"! :)

Thanks for writing this about WUSC!
DJ D and our Metal DJs are all great, and between us (and the rest of the station, of course) there's just about something for anybody at some point during the week.

I have to ask, were you at the Nightmare after Christmas party at The art bar tjis past Decembver? DJ D was doing the spinning, and it was a great time. Just wondering if you happened to be one of the faces in that croud.

DJ Neuro, thanks for your comment! It was my pleasure to plug my favorite radio shows! ;)

Unfortunately, I was unable to make it to the Nightmare After Christmas party in December, but I wanted to go badly! You're not the first person to tell me how amazing it was! Hopefully I will be able to attend the next event!

Thanks again for reading and commenting!
