Columbia history February 13-19

Here’s a quick look at some historic happenings in Columbia this week. All events sponsored by the Historic Columbia Foundation.

Thursday, February 16th

11 A.M: Robert Mills Garden Tour: One of the Foundation’s Specialty Tours,this 60-minute guided tour features the gardens of the Robert Mills House.  Guests can compare and contrast the visual aesthetics of late 18th and 19th century landscape gardening to an earlier styled English Boxwood garden based on formal French gardens.  Cost is $6 per person.

Saturday, February 18th

1 P.M. Women of Hampton-Preston: From the antebellum south through the roaring 20s, women and their roles in society changed drastically over the course of a century.  This tour looks into the lives of the women who worked, played, and stayed in the Hampton-Preston Mansion and at the site.  Each room in the mansion provides insight into the history and progress of women from the time it was occupied by families through the time it housed the Chicora College for Women. Cost is $6 per person.

Sunday, February 19th

HCF Dollar Sunday Admission: Residents of Richland and Lexington Counties are invited to take a guided tour of one of HCF’s historic house museums for just $1.  Visit the Robert Mills House, Hampton-Preston Mansion or the Mann-Simons Site.  General admission prices apply for any house tours after the first.  Purchase tickets for all of the events this week at the Museum Shop at the Robert Mills House.
