Columbia History Feb 27-Mar 4
Here’s a quick look at some historically minded events coming up this week:
Friday, March 2nd
Historic Columbia’s Homeschool Friday 10-11:30 AM: Elementary and middle school homeschool students are invited to participate in Historic Columbia’s "Homeschool Fridays" program taking place on the first Friday of the month.
In March, we'll be learning about schools in the 19th century. From one-room school houses to the colleges that occupied the Hampton-Preston Mansion and Robert Mills House at the end of the 1800’s, schools and universities in Columbia were quite different than they are today.
Students will take part in a variety of activities to see how students packed for college, what they ate, sports they played, and the degrees that they earned. Students can handle a 100 year old textbook and complete an assignment using a quill pen. Reservations suggested and can be made by calling 803-252-1770 ex 36 or emailing jquint@historiccolumbia.org
Sunday, March 4th
Dollar Sunday at the SC State Museum: The South Carolina State Museum will hold one of its ever-popular Dollar Days on March 4th. Admission to the State Museum will be $1, a substantial saving over the regular admission.
The State Museum, located in the old duck mill building at 301 Gervais Street, has 4 floors and by its own admission is “South Carolina under one roof”. Divided into art, natural history, science and technology, and cultural history, there is something for everyone.
