Columbia-area citizens prepare for National Day of Prayer

On Thursday, May 7th, Columbia area Evangelicals will join people from many other faiths in observance of the National Day of Prayer (NDP). This will be the 58th annual observance of Americans uniting in prayer for our country. President Truman signed a joint resolution of Congress into law in 1952 calling for a National Day of Prayer. President Reagan amended the law in 1988, making the first Thursday of May the day designated for national prayer. Historical precedence for such a day was set by the Continental Congress in 1775, which called for a day of prayer for wisdom in forming the United States of America. President Lincoln also called for a day of prayer in 1863 during height of the Civil War. Each year since 1952, the sitting President has signed a proclamation calling Americans to unite in prayer on the designated first Thursday of May. President Obama plans to sign the 2009 proclamation on May 7th as well.

In 2008, it was estimated by the National Day of Prayer Task Force that over 2 million people took part in over 40,000 separate observances across the US. In the Columbia area, several events and observances are planned to encourage Columbia residents to set aside time for public and personal prayer. Prayer is encouraged for our local, state, and federal governments, the military, businesses, schools, and families during the NDP. Below are just some of the planned observances around Columbia:
