After the 49ers’ preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings Sunday night at Candlestick Park, Colt McCoy has been installed as the #2 quarterback behind Colin Kaepernick.

With rumors and a growing suspicion of McCoy’s demise from the backup quarterback rankings, McCoy’s 11 of 15 pass completion percentage for 109 yards solidified his number two spot, according to head coach Jim Harbaugh.

“I feel good right now that Colt’s the backup,” Harbaugh said.

For McCoy, it’s a step in the right direction after a shaky start to his pro career in Harbaugh’s system.

“I felt like I played a good ballgame, much better than the other games. I’ve done some good things this preseason but I’ve also made some mistakes and I think that’s part of the growth within this system with a lot of volume,” McCoy said

Rumors that rookie B.J. Daniels, after having an eye-opening performance in the last preseason game, might get more playing time to evaluate his ability and launch him into better contention for a backup position were inaccurate.

Seneca Wallace, who the 49ers picked up this week, is likely to fill one of the QB backup positions after McCoy reportedly restructured his one-year contact Saturday night. Wallace has pro experience with the Seahawks and Browns.

Third-year pro, former Wisconsin quarterback, Scott Tolzien didn’t take a snap in last night’s game that might be an indication of his future as a 49er when Harbaugh announces the 75-man roster Tuesday.
