There are many reasons Colossalcon in Sandusky, Ohio is growing larger every year. Nicknamed “vacation con” by many attendees, it’s the official kickoff to summer in northern Ohio and takes place at the beautiful Kalahari indoor waterpark resort.

For gamers, it’s only gotten better each year – the game room has grown larger. Even to the point where more projectors had to be used for tournaments. This year’s game room even had a giant inflatable pirate ship in the back for players who had to get up and stretch their legs between rounds! Most attendees only wished the gaming room could have been open longer – more time to crush their opponents at Super Smash Bros. or dance the night away with Dance Dance Revolution (when not at the rave, of course).
Colossalcon also has the superb reputation in attracting some of the best cosplayers around, and gaming characters are always crowd-pleasers! This year, a massive group of Borderlands costumers came together to duke it out wasteland style. Pokemon characters never go out of style as con attendees got creative in portraying their favorite fighting monsters, their trainers, and the villains of Team Rocket! An extremely impressive Dragonborn from Skyrim roamed the hallways, and he even had glowing red eyes. Zelda fans celebrated the newest Zelda title “A Link Between Worlds” with some impressive costumes, and Final Fantasy characters were also popular with cosplayers.

One of the fun costuming aspects of a con at an indoor waterpark is how many people will come up with a swimsuit version of their favorite character. There were a number of Pokemon themed swimsuits that took to the outdoor waterpark, as well as Resident Evil, and a number of Marvel superheroes! It seemed as though not only the attendees, but the characters themselves had decided to take a well-earned break!

Colossalcon has really utilized the increased space of the Kalahari convention center to suit their needs – everything ran smoothly the entire weekend. Between the con essentials of a dealer’s room, artist’s alley, and a number of interesting panels, nothing was too backed up or out of control. One of the events that is unique to Colossalcon (which other cons should seriously consider adopting) was the Otaku flea market on Sunday. The convention sets aside a few rooms and plenty of hallway space for attendees to come free of charge, and spread out their video game, anime, and pop culture items to sell. It’s a great way to pick up deals, lighten the load back home, and encourage interaction between fans.

Overall, this year’s Colossalcon was an absolute success. The organizers are doing a great job, and keeping fans eager and waiting for next year!
