Colorado winter festivals for February

Celebrating winter is huge in Colorado. Festivities featuring ice sculptures, parades, and races in everything but a car can be found all over the state. Here's a list of events celebrating winter for February, featuring Fourth of July Fireworks celebrating Presidents' Day in Avon after The Westin Riverfront Fire & Ice in Nottingham Park.

Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival, Steamboat Springs (February 6 – 10). This historic winter festival, celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2013, pays tribute to the area’s skiing and ranching heritage and is a celebration of all things winter. Events include: the snow sculpture contest, ski races, snow tubing, live entertainment and performances by the Steamboat Springs High School marching band — the world’s only marching band on skis. www.steamboat-chamber.com

WinterFest Weekend, Pagosa Springs (February 7 – 10). Join in three snow-filled days of fun as Pagosa Springs celebrates winter. Events include Nordic races for kids and adults, Anything Goes Downhill Sled Race, Snow Sculpting Contest, Snowshoe Stop and more. www.visitpagosasprings.com

The Westin Riverfront Fire and Ice in Nottingham Park, Avon (with Fireworks, February 17). Attendees of “The Westin Riverfront Fire & Ice in Nottingham Park” presented by Icesculpture.com will experience six world renowned ice carving masters, led by the legendary Scott Rella, founder of Icesculpture.com which includes World Champions and Olympians as they battle in the carving competition starting at 3:00 p.m. The ice competition will culminate with the People’s Choice Award followed by the larger than life Ice Bon Fire. Balloon sculptors, fire and light hula-hoop artists and live music from Turntable Review are also featured. The event's grand finale is when the town of Avon presents their renowned Fourth of July fireworks display starting at 6:30 p.m. to celebrate Presidents' Day. This will be the largest winter fireworks show in the Colorado Rockies featuring over 10,000 shells set to a musical score and broadcast locally on KZYR 97.7. www.avon.org
