Proof that happiness truly is a state of mind... and in this case, Colorado is that state.

2014’s Gallup-Healthways survey is out, and two Colorado towns landed in the top three spots for mid-sized communities.
Boulder and Fort Collins ranked right behind Provo-Orem, Utah, who enjoyed their second year in first place. Before Provo-Orem dominated the survey, Boulder enjoyed this honor. The Huntington-Ashland area in Kentucky landed in last place for the fourth consecutive year.
Colorado was ranked as the seventh most well state, and the Denver-Aurora metro ranked fifth on the large communities list.
The Gallup-Healthways sixth-annual survey used data gathered from 500,000 interviews, then used this information to rank the 189 cities from healthiest to the least healthy with a predetermined set of metrics.

The study, which rated over all well-being and happiness, found that the population’s average waistline, exercise culture, and feelings of safety weighed heavily on their well-being. The Colorado cities ranked in this study ranked well in each of these categories:

Obesity Rates:
Boulder: 12.4%
Denver: 19.3%
Fort Collins: 18.2%

Exercised three or more times weekly:
Boulder: 60%
Fort Collins: 61.4%

Felt safe walking at night:
Boulder: 80.4%
Fort Collins: 85%
