For Colorado State, the awards just keep on rolling in.
Wednesday morning, it was announced that tight end Kivon Cartwright has won the John Mackey Tight End of the Week award.
According to their website, “The John Mackey Tight End of the Week is and honor distinct and different from the annual John Mackey Award. This weekly honor was started in 2004 to draw attention to individual play by Tight Ends during the active season. The Tight End of the Week acknowledgment does not have a direct bearing on the final John Mackey Award selection process.”
Cartwright was a crucial player in CSU's second victory of the season, catching a career-high two touchdowns during the Rams' 59-42 romp of the UTEP Miners Saturday.
The junior tight end put the team on the board with a 22-yard touchdown that capped off a quick first scoring drive; it set the tone for the rest of the game. Later in the contest, the Colorado State leading 21-7, the Rams ran a fake field goal as wide receiver Joe Hansley tossed the ball out to Cartwright, who found himself running free, with no UTEP players nearby. The 21-year old caught the ball running in full stride, and cruised 37 yards into the end zone.
“We've been practicing that for the last year,” Cartwright said of the fake field goal. “It was good that, I think it was Thursday and Friday we ran the play, and it was the same thing. The ball was thrown and I had to run under it to get it. So, it was just routine.”
And he wasn't the only one getting nationally recognized this week.
Senior linebacker Shaquil Barrett took home a total of four awards, as they were announced Monday and Tuesday of this week.
His 13 tackle, four tackles for a loss, three sack, two forced fumble and one pass defended performance earned him Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week, CFPA Defensive Player of the Week, National Football Foundation Colorado Chapter Player of the Week and the Bronko Nagurski Player of the Week awards.
After the decisive win last weekend, Colorado State now sits at 2-3 during their bye week, and will face San Jose State on October 12 at 1:30 p.m. MT.
