Colder, fall-like temperatures and a few inches of snow from Mother Nature have set off the annual race to be the first Colorado Front Range ski area to open.

Both Loveland and Arapahoe Basin started up their snowmaking gear Friday night and have been fast at work laying the groundwork for the 2013 – 2014 ski season. Neither area has announced an opening date but with the change in weather, it won’t be far off.

The earliest A-Basin has opened is October 10, 2007. Two years later, Loveland bested that mark when it opened on October 7, 2009.

The base of Loveland and Arapahoe Basin stand at elevations approaching 11,000 feet which gives them a jump on most other Colorado ski areas. The two annually race to see which can open first with A-Basin usually holding the edge.

Seasonal and dry conditions are expected in the high country for the first half of the week. However an approaching storm system could give both ski areas a bit of a boost with natural snow starting Thursday night.
