Bring on the penguin cheerleaders, Laney and Loren are taking the field! The Brittany spaniel mix puppies from Colorado Animal Welfare League (CAWL) are starring in Puppy Bowl X, airing opposite the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 2 on Animal Planet.

CAWL was contacted in August by Animal Planet as the channel searched for puppies to feature in the broadcast. Lisa Petri, CAWL President, says, “(We) shot some quick video of Laney and Loren and sent it off, not thinking another thing about it. Early in September, we got an email saying that Laney was accepted and could come to New York City! Another week passed and Loren was accepted as well.”

On October 2, Petri, along with husband Kyle Gustafson, packed up crates, beds, food, gear, toys, treats, vet records—and the 14-week-old puppies—and headed for the airport. Petri describes the whirlwind trip to New York, full of exciting firsts for the little canine celebrities: a Midtown Manhattan hotel stay, taxi rides, new dog park friends, and taping the show at the Discovery Channel studio.

The superstar siblings had come a long way. Born into a backyard breeding situation in Nebraska, Laney and big brother Loren (with numerous other animals) were left alone on the property in the care of neighbors who alerted authorities. Through rescue networking, the litter of eight spaniel mix pups arrived at CAWL in bad shape, suffering from neglect, worms, and health issues. CAWL spayed, neutered, and provided health care for all of the puppies, who were lovingly fostered during their recoveries and adopted into caring homes throughout Colorado.

Petri says the energetic puppy pair were extremely adaptable during their tour of the city and Puppy Bowl X taping. They were called on for lots of screen time, and Laney was even selected for an interview with NBC. After all of the excitement, the puppies and their rescuers capped the trip with a day in Central Park where the celebrity pups strutted the green carpet, loved up by local children.

Colorado Animal Welfare League (CAWL) is a 501(c)(3) animal rescue organization founded with the mission to protect homeless animals in Colorado and the surrounding states of Nebraska, Kansas, Wyoming, and New Mexico. As an all-volunteer administration, donations made to CAWL go directly to servicing the needs of the animals. To make a donation, please visit the website at http://coloradoanimalwelfare.org/.
