Colorado Rapids host U.S. Open Cup match for first time in seven years

Orlando City, a third-tier USL Professional Division (USL Pro) team, knocked the Rapids out of the U.S. Open Cup in 2013 with a 3 – 1 win in Florida. This year, they defeated Ocala Stampede and Tampa Bay Rowdies to get to the fourth round.

The Rapids last hosted a U.S. Open Cup match on July 10, 2007, besting first-tier USL Pro team California Victory 3 – 1.

“We’re thrilled to finally host another U.S. Open Cup match here at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, as it’s been seven years since we’ve had a home game in the tournament,” said Rapids President Tim Hinchey, as quoted in a Colorado Rapids press release. “This is a great opportunity for our club and our fans to participate in the historic tournament, and we’ll be doing everything we can to win the Cup.”

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, an annual knock-out tournament featuring soccer teams from all levels of American soccer, from amateur through MLS, is in its 101st year, making it the oldest continuously running soccer competition in the U.S.

If the Rapids win their fourth-round match, they advance to the fifth round, which will be played on June 24 or 25 at a location to be determined. An updated bracket is available here.
