Colorado pot shops list grows to 136 for first day: Police watch cash only sales

Colorado’s first day of pot sales has captured the curiosity of the nation. The doors flew open this morning at pot shops in Colorado as the first day of marijuana sales for recreational smokers was underway. Residents of the state were joined by many out-of-state visitors in the long, long, lines at some of the newly opened marijuana stores.

According to Fox News on Jan. 1, the first day was full of celebration as the lines got longer, bands played and glass blowers created pipes for the occasion. This was all on the sidewalks outside the marijuana shops. People emerged from the pot shops with their receipts for their first legal purchase held high for the cheering crowds to see.

It was a cash-only sales day, as banks have not provided marijuana shops with debit and credit card access, but hopefully that protest from the banking community will soon fade away.

Colorado marijuana shops list: Cash only pot sales and tourist can buy weed

Police were on hand, but not to arrest anyone for buying pot, as their main concern was the cash sales. The fact that the long lines meant that there was a substantial amount of cash in the area for the new legal purchases brought police out to keep an eye on things. This would have been an enticing scene for someone out to score big in a robbery. According to the Colorado Spring Gazette, 136 licenses were issued for pot shops in the state as of Jan. 1.

Tourists were allowed to purchase pot as long as they were over 21 and a few limos were seen with out-of-state plates. Fox News reports that some tourists rode around in limos “eager to try the legal weed, but not so eager to be seen buying it." The state was full of people celebrating the color green today.

The only downfall for the out-of-state folks is that the pot can't cross state lines. Many would think that unless a road block searched every car going out of the state, this would seem difficult to enforce. While it might be hard to enforce, police still vow to enforce this law. Those visitors in limos leaving the state today might raise a red flag.

There is no doubt about it, Colorado was high today, but not just on marijuana. They were high on all the hoopla around making history as the first place in the nation to sell legal pot for recreational use!
