On Monday KOAA News reported that a mountain lion has been destroyed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials following the cat's deadly encounter with a dog in Colorado Springs last Wednesday.
Last week, a Dachshund, who was leashed and on a walk with his guardian, was snatched by the large cat and subsequently eaten.
Wildlife officials determined that such behavior indicated that the mountain lion posed a threat to the community and they set a trap to capture it.
Following the cat's capture, officials euthanized the animal and found the remains of the Dachshund in the stomach.
Residents in the area are torn over what happened following the deadly encounter last week. Some individuals appear to be in support of the cat's destruction, stating:
I believe the indicated threat that the mountain lion displayed was it having the courage to charge near a human, even if relocated it could still have the idea humans could be on the food chain next.
While others are critical of the decision to destroy a wild animal who has been encroached upon by humans.
One individual stated:
Sad to know that our beautiful state is so dry from this drought that our wildlife are hungry enough to have no fear as they look for a meal. It is only natural to look for food when one is hungry, so I believe humans should of left these animals homes and feeding areas untouched. We need to respect them, as we expect them to respect us!
