Colorado MMA ring girl Renee Medina said on Jan. 23 in an exclusive interview with Long Island MMA Examiner Eric Holden that she created a new Facebook fan page to help enhance her career in mixed martial arts.
Medina, 20, takes pride in her unique role as one-half of the world's very first ring girl squad to feature two sisters, as she works alongside her 18-year-old sister Aislynn at MMA events in and around Denver.
MMA fans who wish to check out Medina's new Facebook fan page may do so by clicking here.
"I am a young woman who was introduced to this new and exciting world of the MMA," Medina said of why she wanted to become a ring girl. "I was introduced as a ring girl about a year ago thanks to Leo Stopa and fell in love. Some day I would like to make this a career because I love this new environment its so much fun and meeting all these new interesting people is great for making new friends.Watching the fighters defend and take titles is pretty awesome as well. I really enjoy being part of this industry and making all these new friends because I am really big on family and friends so I like to surround myself with supportive and fun people."
The average woman would get nervous strutting their stuff in a tight outfit in front of a rowdy male-dominant crowd, but Renee takes the ring girl experience in stride.
"I don't mind being half naked. It's just like being in a bikini at a swimming pool, so it's not scary at all," Renee said. "I like being a ring girl because you meet new interesting people in a fun environment. Plus, getting to watch the fights is awesome."
The Medina sisters occasionally work alongside Jessica Boisseaux, Colorado's 2011 Ring Girl of the Year. Renee enjoys the experience and says most people are very supportive.
"Most people are very supportive and think it's cool, but there are some haters," she added. "It's okay, it just means I'm doing something right."
Renee said she doesn't do any crazy dieting or intense workouts to maintain her toned body.
"It's very funny," Renee said. "I don't work out at all and eat a lot of fast food. However, I do plan on starting a new workout plan next week."
MMA fans who hope to see Renee back as a ring girl may have a chance to catch her in action at an upcoming show at Denver's Paramount Theater.
"I am currently auditioning for two fights coming up," she said. "Fight to Win on the 25th at the Paramount Theater, 26th at the Grizzly Rose, and Thunderdome on Feb. 9."
