Pete Maysmith, executive director of the environmental group Conservation Colorado, promises to don a superhero costume and gather signatures on the 16th Street Mall if donors reach his nonprofit’s goal on Colorado Gives Day 2013.

He would gather signatures for the group’s work on carbon pollution standards.

By midnight, Conservation Colorado hopes to reach 500 donations or $50,000 for its education fund. At 8 a.m., Maysmith reported that his group had 203 contributions.

The group is one of more than 1,400 participating in the fourth annual Colorado Gives Day. Nearly half way through the day, at 11:30 a.m., donors had posted nearly $10.68 million in donations, according to projections on the website. At that point, it reached 40,770 donations, and then quickly passed the figure.

Community First Foundation sponsors the online campaign for philanthropy, with the financial support of FirstBank.
