By 10 a.m. on Dec. 10, Colorado Gives Day had exceeded its first year total of $8.4 million in 2010. It had quickly passed the $8.7 million, according to projections.
The benchmark number came 10 hours into the online fundraising event, with 14 hours to go. A ticker on the Colorado Gives Day 2013 website issues a reminder that the deadline looms heavy for contributions to the state’s nonprofits.
As the seconds go by, the display rapidly changes. It projects contributions and the organizations that received them. With more than 1,400 organizations listed, the event has a record number of nonprofits participating.
Four years ago, the first Colorado Gives Day brought in $8.4 million for 539 nonprofits. Its founder, Community First Foundation continues to sponsor the initiative with the financial support of FirstBank.
The website breaks down the participants into 26 categories. They include: animal-related; arts, culture and humanities; civil rights, social activism and advocacy; community improvement and capacity building; crime and legal-related; diseases, disorders and medical disciplines; education; employment; environment; food, agriculture and nutrition; health care; housing and shelter; human services; and international, foreign affairs and national security.
Other categories involve: medical research; mental health and crisis intervention; mutual and membership benefit; philanthropy, voluntarism and grant-making foundations; public and societal benefit; public safety, disaster preparedness and relief; recreation and sports; religion-related; science and technology; social science; unknown and youth development.
Donors may search by one of 26 categories. Also, they may explore by an organization’s name or even just by city or zip code. The motto is “Give Where You Live,” so it is possible to investigate organizations that operate nearby.
The Colorado Gives website operates year round, accepting donations for Colorado’s nonprofits. On Colorado Gives Day each year, the cost of processing the donations is borne for the 24 hours by FirstBank, so all funds donated go directly to the charities.
