Colorado College's Owens resigns as head coach after fifteen seasons

Scott Owens can now be called the former bench boss (or head coach) of the NCHC’s Colorado College Tigers. Owens resigned Sunday after fifteen seasons in Colorado Springs, in which he led CC to a Frozen Four appearance (2005) and three WCHA regular season titles (including 2005). This sudden resignation comes after an agreement between Owens and athletic director Ken Ralph.

There were two years remaining from his most recent contract extension, in 2011. According to Colorado Springs Gazette scribe Joe Paisley:

“Owens, who did not attend the banquet and was unavailable for comment, contacted athletic director Ken Ralph of his decision a few hours before the National Collegiate Hockey Conference program’s annual team awards banquet. Ralph notified the players and athletic department staff members as they arrived for the luncheon at the Colorado Springs Marriott Hotel that afternoon.”

Scott Owens won ninety-six more games than he lost as the Tigers’ head coach, going 324-228-54 in the fifteen seasons behind the bench.

Colorado College will start the national search for the team’s next coach immediately.
