“Coral will be such a big deal in 2011,” asserted Michelle Lamb, editorial director of The Trend Curve, during her Color Trends 2011 seminar held at the recent Dallas Total Home and Gift Market.

After all, she should know.

As chairman of Minneapolis-based Marketing Directions, Inc., and a leading expert in homefurnishing trend and color forecasting, Lamb provides expert guidance to major décor and consumer goods companies.

It’s no surprise Lamb’s seminar drew retailers and interior designers eager to learn next year’s key colors and emerging hues.

“Coral is something that’s going to be a big, big deal,” Lamb repeated, noting that it will be the single most important color of next year, not only in home accents and consumer goods, but also in apparel.

Two other hues will have a strong impact. Red-cast blue “is really going to be growing for 2011,” states Lamb, adding, “Grays are becoming warmer” and moving toward brown.

Going further, Lamb lists several categories as continuing and growing color influences:

Neutrals
Neutrals hues will remain a staple of home décor in 2011, predicted Lamb, commenting that “Some people can’t be bothered with color,” and yet, “Another group considers neutrals to be a blank canvas to which to add color. ” Neutrals shift and change based on the colors around them, she continued reflecting on their “chameleon qualities.”

Shades of Pale
Cooler colors prevail and include icy blues, powder pink, crème de menthe and purples which move away from red.

Dried Herbs & Spices
Delicate hues including French tarragon, lemon grass and purple sage will take the stage.

• Mayan Heaven
Influenced by Mayan culture and folktales, these hues include sunstone gold, coral red, cool peacock and red-cast purple.

• Rewind
With a nod toward the past, colors in this palette comprise red-cast denim and green teals.

• Celebratweets
So important in 2010, social colors turquoise, fuchsia and orange continue into 2011.

• Tweeterdeets
Fresh for 2011 and trending up are royal purple, brocade brown, yellow green and medieval green.

Stay tuned for future articles which will cover pattern and style trends for 2011, color trends for kids, and this year’s holiday color and design trends.
