According to published reports, Katie Couric apparently "caught wind" of the fact that Harry Smith was due for a colon checkup and asked if she could tag along. According to The Daily News, "Smith said he was due for a colonoscopy anyway, and co-worker Katie Couric called asking if he would do it on TV." She's all about the colon, a source said.
Couric lost her husband to colon cancer in 1998 and has, since then, focused like nobody's business on the colo-rectal area. Her interest in the colon was never more evident than during a series of intensely probing interviews with then Vice presidential candidate, Sarah Palin. Couric underwent the procedure herself, live and on TV in 2000, when she was at NBC.
Smith's colonoscopy is scheduled to take place tomorrow morning at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan, NYC and will be broadcast live on CBS.
For his part, Smith said: "I'm all for destigmatizing the [colo-rectal examination] process."
In a wild twist, Smith said Couric will stop by the hospital the night before (tonight) to talk to him about the process and to be on hand when he takes medication intended to cleanse his colon.
People should tune into the CBS Early Show tomorrow morning to see Harry Smith's colon live on national TV. Smith is clearly very dedicated to the journalist profession, willing to go where others only dream of going, doing what others would find shameless.
Although Katie Couric will be on hand for the examination of Harry Smith's colon, there was some doubt whether she would do a live remote from inside the colon, or whether Harry Smith's colon would be available later in the day as a backdrop to the CBS Evening News.
I'm sure America will be watching to see what exactly is inside Harry Smith's colon.
