Colonials sign former All-American QB Colt Brennan

Colt Brennan, a record-setting passer at the University of Hawaii, has signed with the Hartford Colonials for the 2011 United Football League season.

The two-time All-American was a finalist in the Heisman Trophy balloting as a senior. The 6-3, 212-lb. quarterback broke several NCAA passing records at Hawaii, including most touchdown passes in a single season (58), set in 2006. He finished his three-year collegiate career with the Warriors in 2007 with 14,193 passing yards, a 70.4 completion percentage and 131 touchdown passes, then an NCAA Division-1A record.

Drafted in the sixth round of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins, Brennan’s career was derailed by a hip injury that required surgery and forced him to miss the entire 2009 season.

Last year was particularly challenging for the 27-year-old from Laguna Beach, Calif. He was released by the Redskins in August. He signed with the Oakland Raiders a week later before being cut at the end of training camp.

Then, last November, Brennan was critically injured as a passenger in a motor vehicle accident in Hawaii.

“With so much that I’ve had to go through over the last couple of years, I’m just really thankful that I have a place to play football this year,” said Brennan. “The UFL over the last two years has maintained a respect level and has done a lot of things to help a lot of players get back to the NFL. That’s my ultimate goal. I’m so excited and grateful to have a chance to play football this fall. My only focus right now is playing for the Hartford Colonials.”

Brennan is expected to vie for playing time with former Texas A&M standout Jerrod Johnson, the overall No. 1 pick in this year’s UFL Draft. He will be reunited with wide receiver Ryan Grice-Mullen, a former target at Hawaii who signed with the Colonials on May 9.

Colonials players will report to training camp July 12, and the 10-week regular season will commence a month later.
