In Colombia, culture is fashion, and that fashion is sexy. In Medellin, the higher the heels and the tighter the clothes, the more fashionable you are. Part of this sexiness is based on Colombia's international reputation for beauty, while the the rest is a combination of plastic surgery and personal style.
So it's no surprise that the Leonisa Runway at Colombia Moda is consistently packed. Leonisa is one of Colombia Moda's most anticipated runways. This upscale brand attracts legions of photographers, press and eager buyers and spectators.
This year's runway in Medellin didn't disappoint. After a moment of silence to recognize the death of their founder, business was back to normal as the 57-year-old Colombia-based company showed why Leonisa is the leading fashion brand in all of Latin America. The brand is currently exported to over 33 countries, including the United States, and sells more than 38 million pieces a year.
In the United States, Leonisa remains a specialty brand, available only by special order or catalog. However, that will possibly change with their newest collection.
Standing ovation at this year's show
This year's runway exhibited the lacy details, sparkly accents and flattering colors on skimpy thongs, bras and other lingerie that Leonisa is known for. Paisley prints, diamonte accents and bright colors along with strappy details were popular with this year's audience, who gave Leonisa a standing ovation. This is in contrast to other shows at Colombia Moda, such as Cielo, in which the photographers stopped shooting photos after the first few dismal pieces were presented.
