Excelsis Fine Fragrances released their newest “papal scent” on Tuesday, September 17 called “Francis,” to “celebrate the Petrine succession of Jorge Mario Bergoglio as Bishop of Rome, Pope Francis, Pontifex Maximus, 266th Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church.”
“The new papal fragrance responds to a groundswell of requests from customers of The Pope's Cologne, Excelsis' flagship product, which honors the late 18th Century Pontiff, Pope Pius IX. A second popular Papal cologne, Benedictus, honoring the current Pope Emeritus, was introduced in 2006.”
Commenters on Huffington Post seemed to think that the Pope would or should reject and denounce this product. Some atheists (this examiner included) are quick to make jokes pointing out the obvious association concerning the sexual desires of many Catholic priests and the Church’s role in covering up those crimes by moving priests suspected of child molestation and rape around the global to avoid prosecution.
According to the Excelsis website:
“Francis is an engaging, fresh fragrance with a citrusy top note of bergamot and a soft, woody drydown of sandalwood. Smooth and soothing, A grand aftershave.”
The cologne is available on the company’s website for $27 with free shipping within the USA.
