College students get the perks of technology discounts

Technology and education have become so attached that it’s difficult to think of a world where technology is not used in education. From laptop computers, PowerPoint projectors, iPads, and cell phones, technology is in just about every community college classroom. Along with technology comes the operating software needed to run the device. In recent years Mac computers have really impacted the college scene. Although the edge still goes to PC’s, Mac is making their presence felt in multiple ways on campuses.

Windows 7 in the schools

A few years back in its release, Windows 7 was extremely popular. At Central Bible College, Windows 7 system requirements allowed students and employees to continue using computer systems that were at least three years old. They weren’t big fans of the XP operating systems, but Windows 7 was so efficient it made it possible to recapture old equipment. Windows 7 password reset and the overall security had been beefed up which was a big plus for them.

Windows 7 was important in Microsoft attempting to slow Apple’s momentum in the college market. The college scene used to be a Mac environment in comparison to the greater market. However, Mac took a beating from Windows in the late 1990s in the education market as Apple struggled to get itself together.

That has now changed or is currently under transformation. The University of Virginia shows that Mac’s accounted for 37% of the computers owned by first-year college students at their institution in 2008, up from approximately 3% in 2000.

The benefits for college students

This competition is great for college students because it translated into student discounts. With most educational programs, students must identify the school they attend, have a valid e-mail address given by their college or university. Eligible students are allowed to purchase directly from the companies website.

Dell University is a resource for students that allows and educational discount for purchased software or technology. Students can attain a copy of either Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Professional from the online store. It’s open to students, parents, employees and alumni.

Similar to Dell University, you have the Apple store that allows educational pricing. On many of their computers, students are given $100 off on computers and discounted prices on software and products. Those eligible include college students, teachers, employees, and board members.

There are many other companies that offer educational pricing. The important thing to know is what to ask. Simply ask any customer representative if that company has an educational discount program. Many times if you go online company websites will specifically say if they offer that incentive or not.
